Interesting facts about Iceland moss

Our Icelandic mosses come from sustainable EU harvest

Close to the Arctic Circle is the home of the Iceland mosses

Iceland mosses form under extreme conditions. In winter, the ground is covered with snow and ice for around 6 months at temperatures as low as -30 °C. Only in summer at +20 °C and a certain humidity can the mosses grow at all in the few months without darkness at their location.

We harvest Icelandic moss 100% sustainably

Iceland moss (Cladonia stellaris, also known as reindeer moss) colonizes habitats where other plants cannot survive. Therefore, it is highly valuable to the ecosystems of the acidic, nutrient-poor northern forests in the Arctic Circle zone. It serves as food for reindeer and as overwintering habitat for small animals.
Respecting this fact, the mosses are harvested exclusively in compliance with EU regulations. Here, the moss is carefully harvested by hand in small areas, allowing it to regrow within approximately 3-5 years, enabling the area to close and recover.

The natural properties are retained after the moss is harvested.

After the moss is harvested, growth stops because the active ingredients from the soil and the environment are missing.

Harvested moss is comparable to felled wood. The materials retain their natural properties after harvesting and are durable if treated appropriately. Over the long term Iceland moss does not require any care to be preserved.

Bollmoos is also known as hill moss, ball moss, cushion moss or cushion moss.

Bollmoos grows for 10-15 years before it is suitable for use in moss pictures or moss walls. In Europe, certain species of Bollmoos are listed as endangered and may not be harvested. Therefore, we only work with select suppliers who can transparently demonstrate sustainability, from their responsible management of nature in the harvesting areas to their natural stabilization efforts.

In addition to the environmental aspects, boll mosses, like other very short-fibered forest mosses or plate mosses, have almost no storage capacity for air humidity and therefore almost no effect on the room humidity, the fine particle concentration and the aerosol content in the room air.

To design boll and flat mosses

In order to be able to use it anyway, we manufacture it in our factory from the roots of the Iceland moss
